Mount Erciyes

Mount Erciyes (Argaeus)

It is located to the south of Kayseri. On a clear day you can see it from Cappadocia, looking northeast. Erciyes is the highest point of Central Anatolia, with 3917 meters, and was one of the volcanoes that contributed to the formation of the Cappadocia region.

Some ancient coins showed the Erciyes like a volcano erupting. Being generally snowy, Hittites called it “The White Mountain”. According to the ancient geographer Strabo, from the top of Erciyes he could see the Black Sea and the Mediterranean Sea.
